With a success rate nearing 100% due to our meticulous training programme, Scalda College voor Techniek en Design is an official Preparation Centre for Cambridge English exams. In addition, we are a Cambridge English Pretest Centre, which means that our candidates have the opportunity to practise taking a Cambridge English exam using genuine questions under exam conditions.

Who can participate?

At present, Cambridge English exam preparation courses are exclusively provided for students of Scalda College voor Techniek en Design in Vlissingen as part of the Scalda Excellence Programme. Since the maximum size of a Cambridge English group is limited to 10 students, strict admission requirements apply: alongside with a good command of the English language, the exam candidates should possess such qualities as abstract thinking, intrinsic motivation, discipline and the ability to plan, organize and work on their own.

"It's a really nice addition to your regular lessons. As I've heard, there will be a higher difficulty level so that's something that's already trending. It looks very nice on your resume so I think that is really a plus."

Cambridge English Exam Levels

In the Netherlands, a student at level 4 of a secondary vocational college (Dutch “mbo”) is expected to demonstrate English language ability at level B1, (Lower-)Intermediate, of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The Cambridge English courses we offer are aimed at candidates who are estimated at B2 (Cambridge English First) and C1 (Cambridge English Advanced) levels. For further information on CEFR, see this link.

Cambridge English First (B2) is one of the most frequently taken English language exams in the world, testing candidates’ ability to perform in daily life, business and study. Mastering the English language at B2 level constitutes one of the preconditions for admission at institutions of higher professional education (Dutch “hbo”) and is essential for functioning in an international environment.

Cambridge English Advanced (C1) is popular among students and young professionals for the reason of being accepted by most foreign universities (Cambridge English Language Assessment categorises this certificate as “Academic English”). C1 level is sufficient for communicating effectively at a managerial and professional level as well as for following an academic course at university level.

Practical Information

Cambridge English course
The preparation course for a Cambridge English exam lasts one school year. Candidates attend weekly tutorials and work on practice tasks on their own. During the tutorials, particular emphasis is placed on writing and speaking skills as well as on the exam structure in general. In this way we ensure that candidates have a clear overview of the exam requirements and skills essential for performing successfully at the exam. We work with authentic Cambridge English exam preparation materials featuring the latest developments in exam structure and assignments.

Pre-testing
Being an approved Cambridge English Pretest Centre, Scalda offers Cambridge English candidates the opportunity to practise taking a Cambridge English exam using genuine questions under exam conditions. The completed papers are marked and graded by certified Cambridge English assessors. As a rule, the pre-testing sessions are planned halfway through the preparation course so that candidates can test their knowledge and fine-tune their language ability depending on the examiners’ feedback.

Cambridge English exams
The exams are developed, delivered and assessed by Cambridge English Language Assessment and Cambridge University Press. Generally, the exams take place in June at Cambridge English Authorised Exam Centre at HZ University of Applied Sciences in Vlissingen.

Costs
Exam preparation tutorials are free for all course participants. Student books can be borrowed from Scalda for the duration of your course.
As of 2016, the exam fee is €210 for Cambridge English First and €230 for Cambridge English Advanced. This is to be paid before the application process starts in April.
